How to locate network bottlenecks

Network bottlenecks can be resolved quickly and cheaply.

The proliferation of broadband Internet connections allowed the transfer of music and movies, something that would have been impossible with slow connections such as dial-up connections. Network problems can dramatically increase the amount of time required to download a file,
or even cause an error in the download. Although a number of components are involved in creating a network connection, it is possible to isolate the origin of a bottleneck by initially focusing on the most frequent sources of network problems.

Step 1

Confirm that there is a bottleneck that interferes with the performance of the network. During peak hours network performance will be significantly reduced. Check with your service provider to make sure there are no service cuts. Diagnose a network problem if the problems occur regularly and if the service provider has confirmed that the network is working properly.

Step 2

Verify all network interface cards installed in the computers connected to the network. A faulty network interface card can transmit "bad" information that will slow down the connection of all the computers in the network. Check each card connected to the network manually or use software to troubleshoot network problems available in the market.

Step 3

Inspect all the network cable used to ensure that all cables are firmly inserted in all devices. Check the cables to make sure they are not damaged or bent. Make sure the cables are not installed near potential sources of interference, such as high voltage electrical cables.

Step 4

Install the network monitoring software to determine the exact cause of the bottleneck without having to individually check the network components. The software will provide information about how network bandwidth is being used, as well as information about specific equipment or other network devices that are slowing it down. This is the best tool for large networks, where checking every device connected to the network is not practical.
