This is how you can install Linux Ubuntu alongside Windows 10
Make sure you have enough disk space
Before you get started, make sure your hard drive has more than one NTFS partition . One of those partitions is for Windows, while we're going to use the other partition for Ubuntu. To allocate free hard disk space to a new partition, you can use Command Prompt .
- In the search field in the Windows 10 taskbar, type the text
cmd
. You will now see Command Prompt in the search results. Right click on it and choose Run as administrator .
- Then you type
diskmgmt.msc
to go to Disk Management .
- Right click on C drive and choose Shrink Volume option .
- You can now indicate by how many MB you want to shrink the volume. This is the disk space that will be allocated to the new partition. We recommend that you choose at least 20 thousand MB (20 GB) .
Your new partition is now ready. Restart your computer to use it.
Create an installation disc or USB
Go to the Ubuntu website and choose the version you would like to install. Once you've done that, you'll need to download the associated Desktop image . You can choose to burn it to a DVD disc or put it on a bootable USB stick. In the latter case, you can use the Universal USB Installer for this.
Boot from the installation disc
Now that your bootable Ubuntu drive is ready, it's time to reboot your computer . During startup you have to press F2, F10 or F12 - depending on the brand of your computer - to get to the boot menu . Then choose the source where the Ubuntu installation is located.
At this point you will be taken to the Ubuntu installation screen. Choose Install Ubuntu and press Enter .
Installation and partitions
You now have the chance to determine a number of configurations, such as your preferred language and installation type. We recommend that you choose Normal installation . If you want to completely replace Windows 10 with Ubuntu, choose Erase disk and install Ubuntu . However, we recommend that you install Ubuntu as a second operating system, which can be done via the Install Ubuntu alongside Windows 10 option .
In this example, we want to create a new partition for Ubuntu first , so we choose Something Else .
Root, Home and Swap partitions
To use operating systems running on the Linux distribution, we recommend using three different partitions: Root, Home and Swap.
First, it's the Root partition's turn :
- Choose a volume of at least 20 thousand MB (2 GB) .
- Set the partition type to Primary .
- Under location, choose Beginning of this space .
- Select EXT4 journaling file system as an option in the Use as: section .
- At Mount point you just type a
/
.
Then you can create a Swap partition . The size of this partition should ideally be twice as much as your RAM . You can use the above information for further settings. However, under Use as: you must select the Swap area option.
Now it's time for the Home partition . Follow the instructions above for Root but at Mount point type the text
/home
.
Finish the installation
We are almost there. The only thing missing to complete the installation is to select a location , username and password .
The next time you start your computer, you can indicate whether you want to work in Ubuntu or Windows 10. Ubuntu is the default option and it will load automatically if you don't make a selection after 10 seconds.
